Gambling is everywhere. Whether you are betting on a game, playing online gambling, watching the World Series of Poker on TV or spending the weekend in Las Vegas. Unfortunately, where there is gambling, there is addiction. According to PBS.org, 5% of gamblers are addicted. Sure this number seems small. But think about this, PBS.org also reported that in 1997 alone, 87% of people who visit Las Vegas gambled. Of those 87%, 67% played the slot machines. In places such as India, gambling is a main source of income. PBS.org estimates that in 1997 alone over 27 billion dollars a year was made from gambling. That was ten years ago, those numbers and stats only went up. Many people are ok gambling for fun, but others become addicted and obsessed.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse - A Symptom of Something Deeper
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.8 million Americans need help for drug or alcohol abuse. Of those people only a small percent completed rehab successfully. Students took the same survey and of those students, 2.3 million ages 12-17 reported they needed help for drugs or alcohol. Only 8.2% actually got help from a rehab center. Whatever your choice of addiction is, they have one thing in common, low self esteem.
Obesity and the Poor
Obesity rates among the poor reached a 147% increase in 2002 obesity according to medicinenet.com. This made those at the poverty level the fastest growing obesity group. Being obese for those at the poverty line is due to make circumstances which are out of their control. Some of the more common reasons why this group is so obese can be attributed to lack of exercise, food choices and no access to health food stores or supermarkets.
Oregon Health Update
“Healthy Living” is the new tag phrase in Oregon. In the last year alone Portland moved from number 17 to number 9 on the “Americas fittest cities” list in Men’s Magazine. Maintaining a fit or healthy lifestyle can be easy to achieve for many reasons. One, Oregon is heavy on the out door sports and activities. Second Oregon is never short on organic products and healthy foods both on the menu and in grocery stores. Lastly, Oregon has many weight loss facilities all over the state. However, Oregon was not always so health conscious, but over the last decade Oregon has made a pledge to fight obesity one person at a time.

Smoking Ban Spreads since 1998
California was the first state in to ban smoking in bars, casinos and restaurants in 1998. In the ten years which have followed, New York, Arizona, Florida, Colorado and now Oregon have joined the trend. In 2001 government officials argued both sides of this heavily debated issue, in the end the bill passed. Two important issues made their way to the front of the debate, establishing a healthy work place and a smoke free environment for non-smokers. By passing the bill Oregon helped look out for the health of all Oregonians.
Easy Stress Relief
Stress is a state of mind and the best way to combat stress and its effects on the mind is through relaxation. Stress can cause many problems such as concentration issues, lack of good judgment, negativity and lack of productivity as well as many health issues such as heart attacks and chronic headaches. The best way to combat these feelings and factors of stress is through relaxation. Relaxation takes as little as ten minutes a day and can be as simple as breathing exercises, or as challenging as a kick boxing class, the choice is yours.

Sports Improvement-Just Do It
Every athlete, in every sport gets nervous before a game or has a game day superstition. Some of the questions running through their minds are, what if we lose, what if I mess up, or worse injury! These thoughts become so powerful and can take over a players mind. No one wants to say they had a bad game. Everyone wants to be at their physical and mental best while performing, however sometimes this is difficult to achieve without help.
